I just added some photos of Mr. McFrawley’s Traveling Show to my website. I’ve put up a lot of images in the past, but very few showing the book itself. It’s a nicely bound and well printed, so I thought this’d be a good way to show it off a little.

MONSTER FIGHTS, ROUND 2

I’ve finished the entire Monster Alphabet, pitted the critters against each other and seen the results. Now it’s time for Round 2. We’re setting the same monsters against each other to see who’ll continue towards victory, and by 1/1/12 we’ll crown the king of the monsters!

In related news, I’m running a losers bracket over here so we can also crown the worst of the worst.

It’ll take you five minutes to vote, and it’s all I want for Christmas.

I’ll be adding Christmas sketches to the books I sell right up until Christmas! Now with grayscale!

Proof that I was on TV. I realized I tweeted this, but never blogged it. Here’s my appearance, here’s the link. Remember the camera adds 10 pounds, and making a book adds 40.

NICE LETTERS

I was going through a box of Kickstarter stuff and found some great letters some of you sent me when I finished Mr. McFrawley’s Traveling Show. Thanks so much for your support. It meant a lot to me when you first wrote the letters, and they continue to mean a lot when I stumble across them - especially when I’m grouchy like I was last night.

You’re all wonderful. Thanks again!

Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be better writers than you and there’ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that - but you are the only you.

Tarantino - you can criticize everything that Quentin does - but nobody writes Tarantino stuff like Tarantino. He is the best Tarantino writer there is, and that was actually the thing that people responded to - they’re going ‘this is an individual writing with his own point of view’.

There are better writers than me out there, there are smarter writers, there are people who can plot better - there are all those kinds of things, but there’s nobody who can write a Neil Gaiman story like I can.

- A bit of writing advice from Neil Gaiman. (via faramirs)

I said it on the Nerdist Podcast, and I believe it. It’s as true for any area of the arts, not just writing. Perhaps it’s true for life.

(via neil-gaiman)

THIS book has been written for children. I have no shame in acknowledging that I, who wrote it, am also a child; for since I can remember my eyes have always grown big at tales of the marvelous, and my heart is still accustomed to go pit-a-pat when I read of impossible adventures. It is the nature of children to scorn realities, which crowd into their lives all too quickly with advancing years. Childhood is the time for fables, for dreams, for joy.

These stories are not true; they could no be true and be so marvelous. No one is expected to believe them; they were meant to excite laughter and to gladden the heart.

Perhaps some of those big, grown-up people will poke fun of us—at you for reading these nonsense tales… and at me for writing them. Never mind. Many of the big folk are still children—even as you and I. We cannot measure a child by a standard of size or age. The big folk who are children will be our comrades; the others we need not consider at all, for they are self-exiled from our domain.

THE 2 OF SWORDS

Here’s my new Two of Swords card, compared to the Rider Waite card.

Remember, I’ll be posting a new card on the 13th of every month! Thanks!

Here’s a little info about this card from LearnTarot.com:

The Two of Swords is about the barriers we put up between ourselves and others and those we create within ourselves. Internally, we block off emotions and refuse to feel them. We avoid looking at the truth and pretend that everything’s OK. We think one way, but feel another. In countless ways, we divide off parts of ourselves and try to maintain them even when we know they need to be reconciled.

…The lesson of the Two of Swords is that barriers are not the answer. We must stay open if we are to find peace and wholeness.

NEW ART COMING SOON!

Hi guys! I’d be the first to admit that since the book, I’ve been a BIG disappointment. I’ve been all over the place selling copies, freelancing to keep my head above water, and working on a few follow-up ideas, but I haven’t been producing a steady stream of art like I’d promised.

That time has passed! I have decided my new goal is to keep working on new books, keep freelancing, keep selling copies, but I’m going to be updating you with new work every week. I began coloring a wave of tarot cards I drew a while back, and I’m going to be uploading a new one here on the 13th of every month, starting with the Two of Swords next Tuesday.

I’m also starting a really fun project called the CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE which will update on my Facebook page every Monday. I’ll be adding two monster illustrations every Monday for 13 weeks, and whichever gets the most “likes” each week will be the winner. Then we’ll continue a round robin tournament from there. It’ll be a fun way for us all to chat and interact a little (and for me to get more than 76 followers). Please give me a visit on Monday the 12th to cast your vote!

So in case you thought I fell off the planet, here’s proof I’m alive and well - THREE NEW DRAWINGS NEXT WEEK!
