MONSTER FIGHTS, ROUND 2
I’ve finished the entire Monster Alphabet, pitted the critters against each other and seen the results. Now it’s time for Round 2. We’re setting the same monsters against each other to see who’ll continue towards victory, and by 1/1/12 we’ll crown the king of the monsters! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.279751108742156.88439.164499166934018&type=1 In...

NICE LETTERS
I was going through a box of Kickstarter stuff and found some great letters some of you sent me when I finished Mr. McFrawley’s Traveling Show. Thanks so much for your support. It meant a lot to me when you first wrote the letters, and they continue to mean a lot when I stumble across them - especially when I’m grouchy like I was last night. You’re all wonderful. Thanks again!

“Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be...”
– - A bit of writing advice from Neil Gaiman. (via faramirs) I said it on the Nerdist Podcast, and I believe it. It’s as true for any area of the arts, not just writing. Perhaps it’s true for life. (via neil-gaiman)

NEW ART COMING SOON!
Hi guys! I’d be the first to admit that since the book, I’ve been a BIG disappointment. I’ve been all over the place selling copies, freelancing to keep my head above water, and working on a few follow-up ideas, but I haven’t been producing a steady stream of art like I’d promised.  That time has passed! I have decided my new goal is to keep working on new books,...

The Kid Central Festival!
I got a chance to go and visit lovely Bangor, ME this weekend to participate in the Kid Central Festival, which took place on Free Comic Day. During the event, I got to sit next to Josh Alves, whose sweet comic Araknid Kid is soon going to be a graphic novel. I was handing out coloring pages, but Josh was a trouper, drawing sketch cards for the kids. He drew Scooby-Doos and Doras and lots and...

RESTOCKING
Just restocked the local bookstore - their supply had run out. Also, I’ve sold enough now that I’m not even selling on consignment - they bought them straight out! Small steps, my friends, small steps!

I'm officially a writer!
I got my first rejection letter today. Not very personalized, so there isn’t much to share, but still… it’s kind of a cool step. I’m not being glib - most writers get hundreds of these. I officially have one. The great artist Walt Stanchfield used to say that making a bad drawing was getting one more bad drawing out of the way. I feel that way about this rejection…...

Here's the Bridgton News article!
Step inside the big top taken from BRIDGTON.COM - visit it! March 31st, 2011 “Mr. McFrawley’s Traveling Show continued on, one small circus winding its way through the world. What made it special was not its Freak Show, though. Not really. It was special because it was piloted by a happy family of people with dreams in their heads…Some were freaks, and some were not, but they were all doing...

Unsolicited!
I’m about to go mail out some “unsolicited submissions.” Let’s see if any publishing companies are willing to get behind a first-time author with a book about freaks! I’d say it might be long odds, but why not give it a shot.

My new tagline: A book about children
Anyway, I spent well over an hour on that neverending last post, time in which I was supposed to be working. While I was writing it, I thought of a quick aside I wanted to share. I talked with my 97-year-old grandmother last night and she asked how my book release party went. She doesn’t see well anymore, so she hasn’t read the book. Recently, one of Nana’s friends asked her...

Kickstarter KICKED!
Hi everyone! I finally got my shipping tubes and mailed out all of the Kickstarter posters. Now, aside from completing the audiobook, all of my Kickstarter obligations are fulfilled! Prepare for a lengthy and finance-centric post-mortem on my experience. My hope is that this will be useful to anyone who is interested in Kickstarter in the future. Well, class, what have we learned from our...

Facebook Fun
For those of you who don’t follow me on Facebook yet, I put up some pictures of the book release party there. Please check them out. And no critiques about how tubby I’m getting. I was writing a book, dammit! http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/DS-Edwards/164499166934018

Mr. McFrawley's EMPORIUM?!
Step right up and get a custom t-shirt! At CafePress, you can upload images and for no money down, they’ll turn them into t-shirts for you. Sweet! I just uploaded images of each of my main characters and the tarot card of The Devil and they can all now be purchased as t-shirts in various colors and sizes. I’d rather get them done locally (which is cheaper, too), but for now I...

The reviews are coming in! →
This is from Danny Pettry, a fellow Kickstarter who wrote a book to enhance his work as a recreational therapist. He made a video to review “Mr. McFrawley” and I just had to share! Thanks, Danny!

Thank You!
All the Kickstarter books have been mailed out. They haven’t gone to EVERY continent, but they’ve gone to a couple more than I was expecting! For those of you who got your book already, you might notice the lengthy “thank you” section on the first page. Because these people were instrumental in helping this book along, I want to talk a little more about them, because...

What a crazy time...
The books are here, piled high from a whole palette of boxes. They were unloaded from a vividly orange 18 wheeler that sat idling in the breakdown lane in front of my house. The envelopes were already addressed and waiting, so as soon as the boxes came I numbered, signed, and mailed out the first and simplest wave of Kickstarter books. The next wave requires a lot of drawing inside the covers,...

The books...
… are sitting in a warehouse somewhere. They’re coming tomorrow. I talked to a guy at the shipping company headquarters, and he said to call a specific number at 5:30 this morning on the off chance that I’d reach someone on the loading dock. I gave it a shot, but no one picked up, and almost every other extension forwarded to the receptionist, who clearly wasn’t in yet. So...

Shipped via ground!
The books shipped yesterday via ground. That either means they’ll be here earlier than I expected, or it takes a week and a half to ship something via ground. Either way, I’m excited!

What's an F & G?
Ahhh, folded and gathered! I just got the F & Gs for Mr. McFrawley in the mail on Tuesday. Yesterday was too snowy to do much about them, but tomorrow I’m heading out on the town to start showing them around. I’m hoping to post another audiobook page soon, too!

NEW BLOG!
Hi everyone! Since I so enjoyed writing and drawing my First Book Ever, I decided to start noodling on my Second Book Ever. I’m going to be keeping everyone posted on that project on a new blog at dsedwards.tumblr.com while still updating this blog with Mr. McFrawley stuff, new tarot cards, and all future projects that are visually or thematically related! I know it’s a pain to read...

Audiobooks and iPads
The book is printing as we speak, and it looks like it’ll be done on 2/18/11. That’s not great news for my buddy Tuan, since it won’t be done in time for his son Tyler’s birthday, but it’s good news, nonetheless. I’m not about shipping, but I can assume that books’ll be at my house before the end of the month, which means it’ll be to all of my...

Just caught a typo.
DAAAAAMMMMMMITTTTT!!!!!!!!!!! I just noticed “scurryied” instead of “scurried” in the pdf the printers are printing from.  I realize it’s a minor issue - I read the book a dozen times and didn’t catch that, so I guess it’s not a huge deal. Still, too bad to notice something too late - it makes that perfect moment of opening the box of books slightly less...

I'm going to stop celebrating...
…every time I submit my “final” book. Being lazy, I had tried to do my full page layouts in Flash. Turns out there’s a reason that doesn’t work. I might take the time to tell the full and horrific version of what happened eventually, but if you’re anything like me, print shop war stories are growing damn tiresome. Suffice to say, I just relaid out all of the...

...or not
Apparently the book is NOT done yet. As you may remember, I mailed it out on Christmas Eve. I heard back from Bookmasters the next business day that I had been given the wrong template, and that if I wanted full bleed printing, I needed bigger margins. I corrected them over the course of a couple of days, decided to proofread the book AGAIN, and headed out to UPS at about 10 minutes of 5 pm...
